How to hire employees in Belize: the 4 routes
US companies have three legal paths for hiring employees in Belize: setting up a local entity, using an Employer of Record (EOR), or engaging independent contractors. For most US SaaS companies hiring one to five people, an EOR or hiring partner is the natural entry point.
Hire employees in Belize with an Employer of Record (EOR)
Low riskAn Employer of Record in Belize is a third-party company that becomes the legal employer of your hire, managing the employment contract, payroll, taxes and statutory benefits while your team directs the day-to-day work. It’s the faster way to hire employees in Belize without a local entity. See how EOR providers compare across Latin America.
The EOR model covers:
- Compliant employment contracts under the Labour Act
- Monthly payroll in Belize dollars
- Social Security Board contributions and filings
- PAYE withholding and remittance to the Belize Tax Service
- Statutory leave, notice and severance administration
EOR fits well for:
- Teams of 1 to 10 employees
- Pilot hires before committing to a permanent presence
- Remote-first SaaS teams that need compliant contracts without local infrastructure
Employer cost is light: Social Security runs by weekly earnings band and tops out at BZ$28.60 a week per employee. Leave and severance obligations sit on top, and the EOR’s fee on top of that. An EOR won’t find candidates for you.
Hire independent contractors in Belize
Highest riskHiring contractors in Belize offers speed and flexibility, but it carries the highest legal exposure of the options.
Contractor engagements work for:
- Short-term, project-scoped work
- Early-stage market testing before committing to employment
- Roles with clearly defined deliverables and no ongoing operational dependency
What matters is how the work runs in practice. A contractor who works fixed hours, uses your equipment, reports to one client and works under your direction looks like an employee, whatever the service agreement says, and reclassification brings leave, notice, severance and Social Security obligations with it.
To hire contractors in Belize with less exposure:
- Scope engagements to specific deliverables, not ongoing availability
- Avoid fixed schedules and exclusivity clauses
- Have the contractor use their own tools and infrastructure
- Pay against invoices for deliverables, not on a salary schedule
- Get Belizean legal review before any long-term engagement
Set up a local entity in Belize
You own complianceCompany registration runs through the Online Business Registry System (OBRS). Companies with foreign shareholders or directors must register through a licensed registered agent.
Registration runs through these steps:
- Register the company in OBRS through a licensed registered agent
- Register with the Belize Tax Service and obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN)
- Register as an employer with the Social Security Board
- Open a local bank account for payroll
From the first hire, plan for:
- Labour Act obligations on hours, leave, notice and severance from day one
- Weekly Social Security contributions by earnings band
- PAYE withholding for employees above the tax-free threshold
- A Temporary Employment Permit before any foreign national starts work
An entity fits a permanent operational presence or a team large enough to justify the administration. For one to five hires, the overhead rarely pays off.
Hire through a nearshore hiring partner
Recruiting includedA hiring partner covers the part the other three routes leave to you: finding and vetting the right person. LatamCent recruits inside the networks where Belizean support, GTM, operations and engineering talent move, then carries the contract, payroll, Social Security, PAYE and the legal side under a contractor-on-record model, with one USD invoice each month.
If you’re building a product team, see how our nearshore software development model works across Latin America.
- 21-day average from kickoff to signed offer
- Pre-vetted shortlists with technical screening built in
- 60-day replacement coverage on every hire
An entity gives full control with the most administration, an EOR delivers compliance without infrastructure, and contractors move fastest but need careful structuring to avoid reclassification. A hiring partner adds the recruiting.
The Belize dollar, pegged to yours
Convert Belize dollars to US dollars at the fixed peg and estimate the employer Social Security contribution on top. Because the rate doesn’t move, a Belizean hire costs what you budget.
Cost converter
Social Security is paid weekly on 13 earnings bands, with a total of 10% of insurable earnings split between employer and employee. The employer pays BZ$4.47 a week in the lowest band and BZ$28.60 in the top band (weekly earnings of BZ$500 and over), so the employer share is about BZ$124 a month at most. PAYE is withheld from the employee, not added to employer cost. LatamCent hires are priced as salary plus a service fee, quoted per role.
Why a fixed peg matters
BZ$2 per US dollar since May 1976
The Central Bank of Belize has held the Belize dollar at 2 per US dollar for 50 years. Companies that hire in Belize budget a salary once and the dollar cost stays put: no FX hedging, no currency clauses in the contract.
- Halve any BZD figure to get the USD cost
- No exchange rate risk on payroll
- Offers can be quoted in either currency
Why this matters for hiring
A Belizean salary of 5,000 BZD a month costs a US buyer $2,500 a month, plus about $62 in employer Social Security, about $2,562 in total. The peg means that figure won’t move with FX.
Figures are estimates for planning. Confirm contribution amounts with your payroll provider before you sign a contract.

Employment laws in Belize
Employment in Belize is governed by the Labour Act, enforced by the Labour Department, with Social Security under the Social Security Board and PAYE under the Belize Tax Service. Compliance isn’t complex by regional standards, but obligations start from the first day of employment.
Severance depends on tenure and the type of termination. For qualifying terminations, employees with 5 to 10 years of service receive 1 week’s pay for each completed year, and employees with more than 10 years receive 2 weeks’ pay per year. Employees who resign after at least 10 years may qualify for a gratuity equal to severance pay. Service before May 2011 counts at 1 week per year.
Notice is 1 week for more than 2 weeks and up to 6 months of service, 2 weeks for 6 months to 2 years, 4 weeks for 2 to 5 years and 8 weeks after 5 years. The first 2 weeks are probationary and either side can end them without notice; a longer probation of up to 6 months can be agreed in writing.
Build leave, notice and severance into the budget from day one. Employment compliance in Belize is predictable once those reserves are on the spreadsheet.
Minimum wage
The national minimum wage is BZ$5.00 an hour for all categories of workers, in effect since January 1, 2023. In September 2026 the government announced a rise to BZ$6.00 an hour, without an effective date yet.
Onboarding
Before the first payday, get the employee’s TIN for PAYE and confirm Social Security registration. Foreign nationals need a Temporary Employment Permit before they start work.
Contracts
Indefinite employment is the practical default for ongoing roles, and fixed-term contracts are permitted. Written contracts in English are standard practice and strongly advisable for remote roles.
Working hours and overtime
A maximum of 9 hours a day, 45 hours a week and 6 days a week. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. Work on Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday is paid at double time, and work on other public holidays at 1.5 times.
Social Security contributions
Contributions total 10% of weekly insurable earnings across 13 bands. The employer pays the larger share, from BZ$4.47 a week in the lowest band to BZ$28.60 a week for earnings of BZ$500 and over, where the employee pays BZ$23.40.
Income tax (PAYE)
Since January 2025, annual income under BZ$29,000 is exempt. Between BZ$29,000 and BZ$32,000 a BZ$20,000 personal relief plus a tax credit apply, so take-home pay doesn’t fall below BZ$29,000. Above BZ$32,000, income after the BZ$20,000 relief is taxed at a flat 25%, withheld monthly and remitted to the Belize Tax Service.
Monthly payroll in Belize
Payroll in Belize carries a short list of recurring obligations, whatever payroll or HR software you use:
Paid in Belize dollars
Employer and employee shares by weekly earnings band
Income tax withheld and remitted to the Belize Tax Service
Annual and sick leave accrual and tracking
Difference between the Social Security allowance and full pay
Notice and severance reserves by tenure
Companies hiring through an EOR or hiring partner transfer payroll execution and filings to the provider. Local entity holders carry those obligations directly.
Keep Social Security records current: they keep employees’ sickness and maternity claims valid.
Common benefits and perks in Belize
The statutory baseline satisfies the law, not candidates. Belizean professionals have been shaped by two decades of international BPO operators competing for the same English-speaking talent pool, and a below-market package gets noticed.
Private medical insurance
Social Security coverage is basic, so private insurance that extends to immediate family moves offers faster than any other single line item.
Transport and meal allowances
Expected by candidates coming from BPO operations, especially for in-office or hybrid roles in Belize City.
Performance bonuses
KPI-linked pay is standard for CSMs, SDRs and account executives used to metrics-driven international client work.
Internet and device stipend
Market practice in the BPO sector: a company laptop and a monthly internet contribution are table stakes for remote hires.
Training and certifications
A training budget signals growth in a market where BPO roles have offered limited upward mobility.
Flexible schedules
Results-based scheduling is the norm for professionals with international client experience.
Extra paid time off
The statutory minimum is two working weeks. Three weeks from day one signals international standards.
Wellness support
A growing expectation among professionals with international employer exposure.
Treat the supplemental package as part of the offer, not a discretionary add-on.
Layering benefits beats inflating base salary on acceptance rates, early attrition and payroll predictability.
Leave policy in Belize
Maternity and sick leave are set by the Labour Act, with Social Security benefits for insured workers. Paternity and parental leave have no statutory entitlement.
14 weeks
The 2 weeks before and 7 weeks after the expected birth are compulsory. Paid in full after 150 days with the same employer, with Social Security paying an allowance and the employer topping up the difference.
None in law
No statutory entitlement. Many international employers add paid days by company policy.
Up to 16 days
Paid working days per 12 months, once the employee has worked at least 60 days in the previous 12 months. A medical certificate is due within 48 hours.
None in law
No statutory entitlement beyond maternity provisions.
New hires aren’t covered by statutory sick leave until they have worked 60 days in the previous 12 months, so absences in the first weeks sit with the employer.
Maternity pay runs through payroll, with the Social Security allowance offsetting part of the cost.
Budget for:
- Social Security records that keep benefit claims valid
- The maternity top-up to full pay
- Temporary coverage, since benefits fund pay but not capacity
Remote work regulations in Belize
To hire a remote team in Belize, rely on the employment contract. Remote arrangements run under the general rules of the Labour Act, which assume fixed-location work and a 45-hour week unless the contract says otherwise.
In Belize the contract does the legal work.
Working hours, availability windows, duties, deliverables and place of work, all defined explicitly.
Set communication windows, after-hours expectations and on-call rules in the contract rather than relying on informal norms.
BPO practice sets the standard: employers cover hardware and connectivity, and experienced candidates expect it.
Belize passed a Data Protection Act in 2021. Set your own data-handling and acceptable-use rules in the contract as well.
Statutory time off in Belize
Belize guarantees paid annual leave after each year of service and observes 14 public and bank holidays in 2026.
Paid time off (vacation) in Belize
The statutory minimum is the same at every tenure:
Belize public holidays 2026
The 2026 list was published by the Government of Belize in November 2025. Work on Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday is paid at double time, and on other public holidays at 1.5 times.
September has two national holidays 11 days apart, and Easter brings three in four days, so plan support coverage around both.
Popular roles to hire in Belize
Hiring developers in Belize is possible, but it isn’t where the market’s depth lies. The strongest opportunities are in customer-facing, operations and support functions, where the BPO sector has built an English-first talent base over two decades.
Engineering teams in Belize
Technical hiring suits roles that support existing systems rather than build new product infrastructure. The pool is small, so sourcing takes longer than in larger markets.
GTM, finance and marketing roles in Belize
GTM hiring is strongest for English-language customer-facing roles, where the BPO market has already selected for the communication profile US SaaS companies need.
Support, operations and HR roles in Belize
Operations and HR roles benefit directly from the BPO sector’s scale and its high-volume, process-driven environments.

Why should US-based B2B SaaS companies hire in Belize?
Belize combines three things no other Central American market offers at once: English as the official language, a clock close to US business hours and a currency fixed to the dollar.
Time zone overlap with the US
Belize runs on UTC-6 all year with no daylight saving time. In the US winter it matches US Central time and sits one hour behind Eastern, for 7 hours of overlap on a 9 to 5 schedule; from March to November it is two hours behind Eastern, for 6 hours.
Standups, live escalations and sprint reviews fit inside the shared window.
Predictable cost
Local pay runs well below the US, and with the currency fixed at BZ$2 per US dollar there’s no FX risk eroding the math later. Employer Social Security tops out at BZ$28.60 a week, so loaded cost stays close to base salary.
For US B2B SaaS companies building:
- Customer success and support teams
- Sales development and inside sales
- Back-office and revenue operations
- Finance and administrative functions
- English-first onboarding and implementation
For lean teams sourcing one to three operations or support roles, the pipeline is sufficient. For volume engineering hiring, it isn’t.
English skills and the talent pipeline
English is the official language, so you skip the bilingual screening tier that consumes recruiting cycles in Spanish-speaking markets. Remote work is most mature in customer experience, technical support and operations, where the BPO sector normalized distributed work early.
The University of Belize runs Information Technology degrees at its Belmopan campus, and Galen University offers Computer Science. The pipeline is real but narrow.
Internet penetration was 72.4% at the end of 2025, with a median fixed broadband download speed of 48.13 Mbps (DataReportal, Ookla).
Belize’s economy
Belize’s GDP was about USD 3.2 billion in 2024 and about USD 3.3 billion in 2025, among the smallest economies in the region, with real growth of 8.1% in 2024 (IMF). Tourism is the largest earner of foreign exchange, and agriculture and agro-processing form the second pillar.
The BPO and global digital services sector employs about 20,000 people, with operators such as RCC BPO, Fusion CX and The Office Gurus.
The government presented a Global Digital Services Investment Policy in November 2025 to move the sector from traditional call-center work toward higher-value digital services.
The economy is concentrated rather than diversified, and the deeper tech talent pipeline is early-stage.

How to hire in Belize: FAQ
How do I hire employees in Belize as a US company?
Choose a route first: an Employer of Record, a hiring partner, independent contractors or a local entity. Then define the role, budget the salary plus employer Social Security, which tops out at BZ$28.60 a week, and issue a compliant contract under the Labour Act. A hiring partner like LatamCent handles sourcing, screening, contracts and payroll in one workflow.
Is it legal for a US company to hire in Belize?
Yes. US companies have three legal paths for hiring in Belize: setting up a local entity, using an Employer of Record (EOR), or engaging independent contractors. A hiring partner adds recruiting on top. Employment is governed by the Labour Act, with Social Security under the Social Security Board and PAYE under the Belize Tax Service.
Can I hire employees in Belize without a local entity?
Yes. An Employer of Record or a hiring partner employs the worker on your behalf, handling payroll, Social Security, PAYE and Labour Act compliance, so you can hire employees in Belize without a local entity. An entity fits a permanent operational presence or a larger in-country team.
How do I hire a remote team in Belize?
Hire through an EOR or hiring partner and put the remote terms in the employment contract: working hours, availability windows, duties, equipment and data-handling rules. Remote arrangements run under the general rules of the Labour Act, so the contract carries the detail. A company laptop and internet stipend are standard practice.
How do I hire contractors in Belize?
