Are AI Engineers in Demand?
Yes, AI engineers are in high demand. AI engineer is the fastest-growing job title in the US on LinkedIn’s 2026 list. At LatamCent, half of the new engineering roles we recruited for between May and October 2026 were AI roles, up from about 7% in the six months before.
How fast is demand for AI engineers growing?
Every major data source we checked shows demand for AI skills rising, and our own hiring data shows the same shift.
| Source | What it shows |
|---|---|
| LinkedIn, 2026 | AI engineer is the #1 fastest-growing job title in the US |
| Lightcast, 2025 data | 2.5% of US job postings asked for AI skills, up 55% in a year |
| Lightcast, 2024 data | Postings that ask for AI skills pay 28% more, about $18,000 a year |
| World Economic Forum, 2025 | AI and machine learning specialists are among the three fastest-growing jobs worldwide |
| LatamCent, 2025–2026 | AI roles went from about 7% to 50% of the new engineering roles we recruited for |
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t track AI engineers as a separate occupation, so there’s no official 10-year projection for the role. LatamCent figure: engineering roles with AI in the title or forward deployed engineer roles, 1 of 15 opened November 2025 to April 2026, 8 of 16 opened May to October 2026.
Is it hard to hire an AI engineer?
Yes, but mostly because qualified candidates are scarce, not because applicants are. Most engineering applicants look strong on paper, and far fewer hold up in a conversation.
- Resumes pass, interviews don’t. 71% of AI engineering applicants in our pipeline passed our AI resume check, but only 53% of the engineers we interviewed passed our AI voice interview.
- Clients are picky, for good reason. Our clients turned down about 11 vetted engineering candidates for every engineering hire, against about 2 for other roles.
- Fake candidates target engineering roles. 1 in 135 engineering applications was flagged as fraudulent, against 1 in 968 for other roles.
LatamCent hiring data, 48,398 applications, November 2025 to October 2026.
Does AI engineering have a future?
Yes. The job title may keep changing, but the work of putting AI into real products is growing.
Most new demand is for applied work rather than research: building LLM-powered features, AI agents, retrieval systems and the evaluations that prove they work. That’s why related titles like applied AI engineer and forward deployed engineer are also climbing. For employers, the safest hire is an engineer who has already shipped an AI feature to real users and kept it working.
Competing for AI engineers with every other company?
LatamCent hires pre-vetted AI and ML engineers in Latin America who work US hours and cost far less than a US hire. You interview a shortlist and make the hire in 21 days or less.
